President Ilham Aliyev of the Azerbaijan Republic declared 2010 to be the Year of Ecology. Many state structures undertook a variety of projects within this context. A photographic exhibition was opened in the Art Gallery of the Museum Centre on 3 December, “The Cleanliness of our City Depends on Each of Us”; it was opened by the OJSC (Open Joint Stock Company) Clean City under the Ministry of Economic Development of Azerbaijan. In greeting guests, Zakir Ibrahimov, head of the board of the OJSC Clean City, said that the cleanliness of Baku was not solely the responsibility of state structures; it was also the duty of each citizen. The main purpose of the exhibition was to draw people’s attention to the correct approach to waste and preserve the cleanliness of the city.
Participants in the exhibition included representatives of state structures, of foreign organisations working in Azerbaijan and of the press. Twelve photographic artists invited to submit work by the OJSC “Clean City” prepared different photographs and video reports showing people’s approaches to the problem of everyday waste and the cleanliness of the city.
