An exhibition of the work of the famous painter, Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan, Enver Askerov, opened on 4 May 2010 in the Art Gallery of the Museum Center, coinciding with his 70th birthday. The works displayed in the exhibition had been completed in recent years and were unfamiliar to most viewers. This exhibition is the artist’s distinctive account to his viewers.
Enver Askerov received his first professional education at Baku’s Azim Azimzade College of Art. His first teachers were masters of fine art such as Bagir Maratli, Kamil Khanlarov and Latif Feyzullayev. He then graduated from St. Petersburg’s V. Mukhina Higher Institute of the Arts. In 1968, Enver Askerov became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1993, he was awarded the Azerbaijan Artists’ Union’s Sultan Muhammad Prize. The artist held solo exhibitions in Baku in 1994 and 2003. His works were also displayed in the “World Bank Art” exhibition, in London, in 1998. Some of Enver Askerov’s works are held in private collections in the USA.
Enver Askerov first exhibited his work ‘Tubes’ in 1967. The artist’s style of painting has changed over the years and he established his own style, distinctive from other artists. Looking at his works, one contemplates the artist’s inner world. The use of dark green colours for the crowns of forest trees gives a mystical tone to this aspect of nature. They only conditionally belong to realism. Green tones predominate on the artist’s palette. This is the colour of nature. Looking at the canvas, it seems that nature itself, rather than the artist, has created all these colours. Enver Askerov was awarded the title ‘Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan’ in 2000. In 2009, his works were exhibited with great success in the ‘Baku Unlimited’ exhibition in Basle, Switzerland. His works are held in many of the world’s most famous museums.
