An exhibition by Azerbaijani artists, dedicated to 31 March – Azerbaijan Massacre Day – opened on 30 March 2010 in the Art Gallery of the Museum Center.
As is known, 31 March 1918 saw a truly bloody event enter the pages of the Azerbaijani nation’s history. The date is very familiar to us. In those hard times, the Armenian Dashnak army and punitive Bolshevik armed forces attacked the peaceful Azerbaijani Turkish population in Baku and other parts of the country, and a true massacre was carried out against our nation. Over time those trials also affected our talented people and made their mark on the work they produced. Those days live on in the work of Azerbaijani artists, too. Their main means of struggle are their art, their pencils and their brushes. In this light, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced, in January this year, an assembly of works dedicated for the first time to the events of 20 January, the Khojaly massacre and 31 March Massacre Day.
More than 100 works by 90 artists were shown at the exhibition. Although the general theme included mournful motifs and dark colours, hope and belief in our country’s bright future was also expressed. The main purpose behind the exhibition dedicated to 31 March Azerbaijan Massacre Day was to encourage a patriotic spirit within the young generation, to display the effect of all these misfortunes of our compatriots on the work of Azerbaijani artists and to commemorate the innocent victims.
