The ‘Gunay’ Children’s Theatre performed the play ‘The History of Love’ in the Assembly Hall of the Museum Center on 10 March 2010. The play was dedicated to Azerbaijan National Theatre Day, 10 March. Azerbaijan’s theatre society opened the 137th season of Azerbaijani theatre this year. The play ‘The Lenkoran Khan’s Vizier’, by Mirza Fatali Akhundov, was staged for the first time upon the initiative of Hasan bey Zardabi, Najaf bey Vezirov and Askeraga Jorani, in Baku on 10 March 1873.Today, the young actors of the ‘Gunay’ theatre continue the traditions of Azerbaijani theatre. The plot of the play was based on motifs taken from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare. The scriptwriter and director is Larisa Tarusova.
The Museum Center has held many different events for children in 2010, within the project ‘Museum to Children’. These events have included thematic lectures, exhibitions of children’s’ paintings, theatre performances, holiday events etc.
Among these events a special place was accorded to a series of plays, “Theatre in the Museum”. Within this series, the ‘Gunay’ Children’s Theatre play, and the performances of the young actors aroused special interest. The ‘Gunay’ Children’s Theatre was formed in 2003, based in the Children’s Aesthetic Studio in the Green Theatre’s Concert Complex. Since then, it the recipient of Grand Prix and diplomas, the only Russian-speaking children’s theatre has a leading position in the cultural life of Baku and Azerbaijan. Larisa Tarusova has been the Art Director and Director of the theatre since 2003. The children demonstrate their talent by participating often in different competitions and festivals. Recently, the ‘Gunay’ Theatre performed with success at the 23rd International Children and Youth Groups Festival in Toulouse, France. All participants were awarded diplomas for their successful performances. The theatre’s repertoire includes several interesting plays: ‘The History of Love’, ‘Arshin Mal Alan’, ‘Nutcracker’, ‘The Tale of the Fisherman and the Goldfish’, ‘Persian Motifs’ and others.
